   The Gospel in the Mass tells of the Priests and Levites whom the Sanhedrin sent to inquire of Saint John the Baptist if he were the Messiah.

3. Fourth Sunday of Advent — Expiation of Sin p. 17

   Saint John then left his desert solitude and entered into the country about the Jordan, to exhort men to do penance for their sins.
